epidermix 345 “Slow-set”

A two-component, pigmented, solvent-free epoxy resin bonding agent shall be used to bond new concrete to old concrete. The product shall achieve 50 MPa compressive strength, 20 MPa tensile strength, 35 MPa flexural strength and 25 MPa shear strength at 7 days, @ 20 ºC.

Design Criteria

epidermix® 345 “Slow-set” is designed to have the following overlay times and pot life:

Overlay Times

 Pot Life

24 hours @ 20 ºC

5 hours @ 20 ºC

12 hours @ 30 ºC

2.5 hours @ 30 ºC

8 hours @ 35 ºC

1.5 hours @ 35 ºC

Repair Areas:

  • The areas to be repaired are to be shown on the drawings or as indicated by the Client’s Representative
  • The areas are to be clearly marked out on site and agreed with the Client’s Representative before proceeding
  • The areas may be adjusted by the Client’s Representative as work proceeds according to the conditions found
  • The surfaces adjacent to and of areas for repair shall be cleaned to remove any dust, unsound material, plaster, oil, paint, grease, corrosion deposits, organic growth, etc.
  • Within the repair area, the concrete cover to reinforcement links or main bars shall be determined by cover meter. A small area shall be chiselled out and the concrete cover and the depth of deteriorated concrete confirmed by measurement
  • A small area shall be chiselled out and the concrete cover and the depth of deteriorated concrete confirmed by measurement.
Substrate Preparation

Clean all surfaces and remove any dust, unsound material, plaster, oil, paint, grease, corrosion or algae.

Roughen the surfaces, remove any laitance and expose aggregate by light scabbling or grit-blasting.

Reinforcement Preparation

All exposed reinforcement shall be cleaned of corrosion products by wet grit blasting or other approved means to achieve a surface finish to comply with a standard of steel cleanliness such as SA2½ (BS7079:Part A1/ISO8501) or as directed by the Client’s Representative. Special care shall be taken to clean out properly any pitting which may have occurred in the steel bar.

When the corrosion products have been removed and if directed by the Client’s Representative, the diameter of the reinforcing bar(s) shall be measured. If considered necessary by the Client’s Representative the existing reinforcement shall be cut out and replaced and/or additional bars added in accordance with instructions. Any deep pitting of the reinforcing bars shall be brought to the attention of the Client’s Representative.

Reinforcement damaged during the removal of concrete or the preparation process shall be brought to the attention of the Client’s Representative and if required, shall be repaired or replaced.

Where the presence of chloride is determined, it is essential that the cleaning process is completed by pressure washing with clean water the total exposed areas of reinforcing steel to ensure the removal of all residual contamination from the pitted surface of steel.

Reinforcement Priming

Immediately following preparation and cleaning, the reinforcing steel shall be primed with durarep® ZR primer single component epoxy primer complying with the relevant parts of BS4652, 1971 (1979) Specification For Metallic Zinc Rich Priming Paint Type 2.

The durarep® ZR primer shall be brush applied to the cleaned reinforcement ensuring that all exposed steel is fully coated. Special attention shall be paid to the backs of the steel bars and where steel bars are tied together. It is essential that this coat is continuous with that of any adjacent repaired area where zinc-rich primer has been used. Avoid excessive over-painting onto the concrete and allow it to dry.

Mixing

Care should be taken to ensure that the epidermix® 345 is thoroughly mixed. The ‘base’ and ‘hardener’ should be stirred separately before mixing to disperse any settlement. The entire contents of the ‘hardener’ tin should then be poured into the ‘base’ tin and the two materials thoroughly mixed using a suitable slow-speed drill and mixing paddle for 2 minutes until a fully uniform colour is obtained. The sides of the tin should then be scraped and mixing should continue for a further 2 minutes.

Application

Only fully integrated mixes of epidermix® 345 shall be used and within the pot life of the product.

epidermix® 345 “Slow-set” can be applied by brush or spray to the prepared surfaces, at 5.5 m² per kg. A minimum of one hour shall elapse before the overlaying concrete or screed is applied to the primed substrate.

Apply epidermix® 345 to the primed surface with a wood float, or by gloved hand.

Temperature

At 20 °C the initial hardness of epidermix® 345 345 occurs approaching 24 hours and the full cure is at 7 days.

Below 20 °C the curing time increases and the minimum application temperature is 5 °C.

In cold weather the epidermix 345 and should be stored in warm conditions.

At ambient temperatures above 30 °C, the material should be stored in the shade or in air-conditioned environment for 12 hours before use.

Cleaning

epidermix products should be removed from tools, equipment and mixers with abe® super brush cleaner immediately after use. Hardened material can only be removed mechanically.
