Clear Epoxy Seal or Topcoat

abecote® 436 is a two-component solvent-borne, polyamine-cured epoxy coating.

Uses

abecote® 436 is a sealer for porous cementitious substrates.

abecote® 436 may also be used as a clear seal coat for abescreed.

Advantages
  • Good sealing characteristics
  • Easy to apply
  • Non-toxic when cured
Properties of Wet Material

Full cure: 7 days

Over-coating time @ 25°C

Minimum: 12 hrs

Maximum: 48 hrs

Application temperature range 10ºC to 40ºC
Do NOT apply If humidity in excess of 85%
Do NOT apply If surface is less than 2°C above dew point.
Surface Preparation

Cementitious substrates only:

The substrate must be dry before application Electronic moisture content tests must be conducted prior to application of the priming system. Maximum moisture 4-5% max. (e.g. Protimeter Survey Master or equivalent)

or

Dynamic Calcium Chloride moisture “weight gain” over 24 hours

or

(a practical overnight “plastic sheet test” is also advisable approx. 1m2 masked down on surface).

Bonding / Priming

Not required.

Mixing

Stir the contents of each container. Add activator to base and stir together for at least five minutes using a flat paddle. It has been found that mechanical mixing gives better dispersion than manual mixing. A suitable mixing method would be a slow-speed electric drill (approximately 200 rpm) fitted with a paddle.

The mixed material must be left to stand for 20 minutes prior to application.

If only part of a kit is to be used add one volume of activator to 4 volumes of base. Measuring must be accurate and separate stirrers and containers used for proportioning each component.

Application

abecote® 436 may be applied by brush, short-fibre roller or airless spray. Spraying would be through a tip of approximately 250 μm. abecote® 436 should not be applied if the ambient temperature is below 10°C. The curing reaction will not proceed at low temperature. If surfaces are not at least 2°C above the dew point a film of condensed moisture may be present. This will undermine adhesion of the coating.

Provide adequate ventilation during application and ensure that there are no sources of ignition in the vicinity.

Coverage

10 to 12 m2/L (smooth surfaces).

Cleaning of Equipment

abe® super brush cleaner before setting.

Protection / Maintenance on Completion

Protect surface against traffic and spillage until cured. Most epoxies chalk and degrade in extensive sunlight.

Model Specification

Two-component solvent based epoxy resin floor coating. The coating will be abecote® 436; a two-component epoxy resin coating system applied in accordance with a.b.e.® recommendations.

Packaging

abecote® 436 is supplied in 1L and 5L yield metal containers.

Handling & Storage

All abecote® 436 related products have a shelf life of 12 months if kept in a dry, cool store in the original, unopened packs. If stored at high temperatures and/or high humidity conditions, the shelf life may be reduced.
