Water-based metal primer and corrosion protection coating
4-metal DTM is a water-based metal primer and corrosion inhibitor with a self-crosslinking, multi-phase acrylic dispersion. This offers outstanding corrosion protection, superior water resistance, and adhesion properties.
Uses:
- As a water based metal primer for water borne bitumens, acrylics, alkyd enamels and polyurethanes
- The unique advanced technology offers a 4-in-1 system for metal protection:
1. Direct to rust (with required surface preparation)
2. Direct to metal
3. Primer and
4. Top coat - Can be applied to prepared metal surfaces: new mild steel, galvanised steel, clean carbon steel, hot-dip galvanised steel (with the passivating layer removed), aluminium, and Grade 304 stainless steel

Surface Preparation
Iron or steel surfaces should be free of loose rust. Make sure the substrate is spotless, sound, dry, and free of impurities like lichens, oil, grease, salt, dirt,
and algae.
Exposed metal should be thoroughly wire brushed to reach as clean a state as possible.
Galvanised steel should be degreased and completely free of white rust and preventative compounds.
For new and weathered surfaces 4-metal DTM is self-priming, to ensure good adhesion abrade surface with coarse sandpaper.
For previously painted surfaces – remove powdery, loose and flaking paint completely with a wire brush, sandpaper or high-pressure cleaner. Abrade
surface with coarse sandpaper to ensure good adhesion. Wipe down with a slightly damp cloth and allow to dry.
Rusted surfaces – remove rust with a rust cleaner and degreaser.
Mixing
Stir well before use.
Coverage
Practical coverage for estimated purposes: m2/litre per coat:
– Prime coat @ 100 microns DFT – 6.8 m2
– As a top coat @ 200 microns DFT – 4.88 m2
Application
Drying time @ 25 0C: | Touch dry – 30 minutes |
Hard dry – 2 hours | |
Overcoating time @ 25 °C | Minimum 2 hours |
Cleaning
Tools, brushes and mixing equipment should be cleaned immediately after use and before material has set with abe® super brush cleaner followed by washing with soap and water.
Protection On Completion
4-metal DTM may be recoated as a maintenance coat as required.
