Twin pack PU compound – semi-rigid PU joint filler

flexothane® 65 P is a twin pack pourable PU compound designed to be used as a joint filler in floors where movement is limited and reinforcing of the edges of the joint is required. Due to its high compressive properties it helps reinforce the joint against the effect of wheeled traffic. It exhibits good resistance to cleaning solutions, mild acids and alkalis and oils.

Uses

flexothane® 65 P can be used as a reinforcing joint filler for joints in floors designed to handle heavy wheeled traffic.

Advantages
  • Tough material, withstands heavy traffic, high abrasion resistance
  • Good chemical resistance to a range of chemicals
  • Can be installed to a flush finish to protect the joint arises in factory or warehouse applications
  • No priming required
Surface Preparation

Thorough preparation of joints is essential if a satisfactory seal is to be obtained. For concrete, stone or masonry surfaces, all traces of dust, laitance, mould release oil, previous sealant and all other foreign materials must be removed by sandblasting or mechanical abrasion, followed by blowing out the joints with dry, oil free compressed air.
Blasts clean steel surfaces to at least SA 2.5 and apply a coat of a suitable anti-corrosive primer.
Suitable cleaning solvents include abe® thinners no. 3, IPA or MEK. Ensure the solvent is compatible with the substrate prior to cleaning.

Protection of adjacent surfaces

Masking tape applied to areas adjacent to the joint will protect them from contamination and enable the joints to be finished in a neat line. The tape should be applied after the joint has been prepared, prior to any priming or sealing operation and removed after all finishing and tooling operations have been completed, but before the sealant has cured.

Mixing

Mix the two components together using a slow speed electric drill.  Scrape down the sides of the container and remix, preferably in a second container. Use immediately as the product has a limited pot-life.

Application

In new floors delay installation as long as possible as shrinkage of the concrete causes progressive opening of the joints. A minimum of 28 days for the concrete to cure is a requirement. The joint depth should be a minimum of 15 mm and for joints wider than 20 mm the depth should preferably equal the width. The depth of the joint should be controlled by using a layer of dry 5 mm sand. When it is anticipated that the joint movement will exceed the movement accommodation factor of the sealant, i.e. before shrinkage of the concrete has ceased or temperatures have stabilised, the use of a temporary sealant should be considered.

Pour into the joints. No priming is required.

Tooling

Tooling of sealants is necessary for complete air-free filling of voids and to assist in making contact to the surfaces to which the sealant is applied. The surfaces of the joint should be smoothed with a clean putty knife or spatula.

Cleaning

Tools should be cleaned immediately after use, and before the material has cured, with abe® super brush cleaner followed by washing with soap and water. Once the product has polymerize it may only be removed mechanically.
