a.b.e.® Construction Chemicals has supplied specialised products for the protection of the concrete surfaces and joints of three waste water treatment works in the Cape Province.

a.b.e.® is part of the Chryso Southern Africa Group.

Dean Botha, a.b.e.® Technical Sales Consultant in the Eastern Cape, says the company supplied six products for the upgrading of the Fishwater Flats waste water treatment works in Port Elizabeth. The plant supplies the Coega IDZ and surrounding industries with industrial quality water.

A wide range of <strong>a.b.e.®</strong> products were used for the upgrading of the Kruisfontein waste water treatment works at Humansdorp. The products provided by a.b.e.® to the two contractors handling the project: Ruwacon and Cote-Rite Contractors, were:

  • dura®rep FC fairing compound, a thin film coating that provides a protective and decorative coating to concrete and masonry surfaces. The coating was used to cover about 450m² of concrete areas;
  • dura®rep FR, a cement-based, fibre-reinforced and chloride-free repair mortar which was used over about 125m² for remedial concrete work;
  • dura®joint SW-R expanding Butyl rubber water stops used to seal 110m of concrete panels;
  • dura®joint flexband system which features an epoxy adhesive incorporating a membrane based on funtionalised thermoplastic elastomers. This was applied over concrete joints of about 130m in length to prevent seepage; and
  • dura®kol G HM, a polysulphide joint sealant applied to about 130m² of perimeter jointing.

The consulting engineers for the Fishwater Flats projects were Royal Haskoning DHV.

Botha says a.b.e.® also supplied a wide range of products for the Kouga Municipality’s upgrading of the Kruisfontein waste water treatment works at Humansdorp. “

For this project, a.b.e.® supplied the contractors, LRC Civils, and Tecroveer, with dura®rep FR, and a variety of dura®joint system products, including dura®joint external E 200mm PVC water stops, placed on blinding layers prior to the casting of the footing,’’ Botha explained.

Finally, a.b.e.® also provided the concrete protection products for the upgrading of the Vredenburg waste water treatment works, commissioned by the Saldanha Bay Municipality.

For this Western Cape project, a.b.e.® provided epidermix 344 wet-to-dry epoxy adhesive for the structural bonding of fresh wet concrete to the existing surfaces, and various dura®joint PVC water stops and ancillary products within the system, as well as a.b.e.®’s holding company, Chryso® SA’s Chryso®Cure WB water-based wax curing compound (ASTM compliant) which retained the moisture in the concrete for effective curing during the hydration process.

Brett Papayani, a.b.e.® Technical Sales Consultant in the Western Cape, says the contractors who handled this project were A and P Civils & Trading.
